A Quick Guide to Veterans’ Benefits for In-Home Care
If your aging loved one served in the United States military, they spent part of their life protecting the independence we all enjoy. Our veterans sacrificed so much to ensure our safety, and now that they are getting older, it is our turn to make sure they have everything they need to stay safe and comfortable in return. Staying in the home they're used to may now require a new kind of support system. Many former service members qualify for specific assistance that makes staying in their familiar surroundings much easier, but it can feel tricky and overwhelming to navigate. Veterans’ benefits for in-home care are a wonderful way for them to receive the high-quality help they earned while staying right where they belong.
Does the VA Cover In-Home Care?
Yes. The VA offers several programs that can help cover personal at-home care for eligible veterans. Eligibility generally depends on military service history, disability rating, and need for caregiving services.
VA Benefits That Can Help Cover In-Home and At-Home Care
Here is an overview of the most common VA programs available to veterans who need at-home care and support:
This enhanced VA pension benefit is available to veterans—and in some cases, surviving spouses—who need help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and medication management. Eligible recipients receive a monthly payment that can be applied toward professional in-home care costs. This benefit is separate from standard VA disability compensation, and the application process takes time, so starting early is important.
Through the VA Community Care Network, eligible veterans may qualify for non-medical in-home support, including personal care, light housekeeping, and assistance with daily tasks. A VA provider writes a physician’s order, which is sent to the VA Community Health Program. The VA then conducts an assessment to determine the approved weekly hours—typically between 4 and 18—for a six-month period. Family Choice Home Care can be specifically requested when your provider submits the order.
For veterans whose primary caregiver is a family member, the VA’s Caregiver Support Program also provides respite care—temporary relief for the caregiver while ensuring the veteran continues to receive quality support. Respite hours are approved in a lump sum to be used within a six-month window. This is an often-overlooked benefit that can make a meaningful difference for families providing home care in Lexington, KY, and surrounding areas.
